Title: 'Warlu Dreaming'

Medium: Acrylic on Cotton Canvas

Size: 30" W x 60" L, 35mm D

About the Painting:

I am a proud Yindjibarndi and Pinikura woman and this painting is my interpretation of the creation of the waterways and waterholes back on country in the Pilbara.

Warlu meaning "Serpent" in Thalanyji/Yindjibarndi language.

"Before creation time (Marrga) when the spirits brought the world to life, it was virtually dry. And then Burrimirndi, the great rainbow sea serpent came along.

This Aboriginal dreamtime story begins with two Yirdiyarra boys who were to undergo a Birdarra Warmulu Law initiation ritual. Growing hungry they caught a gurrangurrah (a mulga parrot) and roasted it over a fire. The cooking smoke drifted across the land to the sea, waking the great Barrimirndi from its depths.

The burnt feather smell angered Barrimirndi as the gurrangurrah was sacred and it was against the Birdarra Law to eat one. So he began to hunt for the young men, travelling underground beneath the mighty Chichester Range.

Barrimirndi searched vast distances, the giant serpent cutting gorges and rivers into the dry land as he passed - and creating permanent waterholes every time he came to the surface to follow the boys’ scent.

Eventually he found them at Nhankangunha and burst from the ground, lifting them high in the air in a wananggaa (a willy-willy). This created a massive waterhole, known today as Deep Reach Pool.

Seeing their boys consumed, the Yijiyarra people wailed. Carrying across the land, the sound made Barrimirndi even angrier and the sea serpent created a great flood. The torrents of water filled all the dry river beds, waterholes and aquifers he had formed while hunting the boys.

These waterways now supply the Pilbara towns of Karratha, Roebourne, Wickham, Point Samson and Dampier. Barrimirndi is said to still rest in Deep Reach Pool, which is why the Yindjibarndi people continue to carefully protect their country to this day."
