Mawson's Huts Foundation Fundraising Raffle | RaffleLink

Support our mission by purchasing tickets today!

The Mawson’s Huts Foundation was established as a not-for-profit charity in 1996 to conduct conservation work on the Mawson’s Huts Historic Site at Cape Denison in Antarctica. The Foundation has funded and organised 14 major expeditions to Cape Denison to conserve this irreplaceable piece of Australia’s Antarctic history.

In 2013, the Foundation opened the replica museum, an exact replica of the historic buildings at Cape Denison on a waterfront site in Hobart, less than 200 m from where Mawson’s expedition departed in 1911. On December 3, 2023, we will be celebrating 10 years since our opening.

Authentic in its origins, the Mawson’s Huts Replica Museum is a replica in every sense of the word. Heritage carpenters, who worked at Cape Denison on the conservation of the original huts, took hundreds of photographs and measurements, which were faithfully used to create the replica on their return to Hobart – right down to using Baltic Pine cladding and flooring sourced from the same region in Scandinavia, which was also supplied by the same Melbourne merchant in 2013 that supplied the original expedition over 100 years ago. This replica hut today offers museum visitors an opportunity to literally ‘step back in time’ and, in doing so, understand and develop an appreciation of the foresight, endurance and resilience Australian Antarctic explorers displayed from the early days of exploration through to the present-day scientists and tradespeople heading south in Mawson’s wake.

PAINTING BY ANGUS DOUGLAS

Oil on Canvas – 61 x 74 cm

Douglas began painting in watercolours, which evolved from his sketches he did whilst overseas in Asia, Europe and around Australia. He undertook painting courses with Max Angus and Patricia Giles. Under their mentorship, along with encouragement from fellow artist and mentor Jerzi Michalski, Douglas’ skills grew and enabled his move from paper to canvas. This was the medium that gave the artist greater contrast of colours and light and more control of the paint, which is not so achievable in watercolour.

A Glover Prize Finalist numerous times, Douglas received ‘Highly Commended’ by the judges for his work ‘Expatriate’ in 2016.

Whilst the painting is currently underway the Aurora Australis sitting in Hobart harbour is indicative of what the finished artwork will be and will therefore surely be a wonderful addition to the lucky winner’s wall.
